What is Somatic Therapy?
I get asked this a lot, usually by someone who's tried talk therapy before, understood a lot about themselves, and still felt stuck. If that's you, I want to explain what somatic therapy actually is, because I think it might be the piece you've been missing.
Talk therapy has real value. Understanding your story and naming your patterns matters; but insight alone doesn't always create change, you can know exactly why you react a certain way and still find yourself doing it again next week. That's because trauma and anxiety don't just live in our thoughts. They live in our nervous systems and our bodies, and no amount of talking about that can fully reach it. We have to work with it.
Somatic therapy works with the body-mind-heart connection, not just the mind on its own. As we talk, we also pay attention to what's happening in your body in real time; where you're holding tension, what a feeling actually feels like physically, what your nervous system is doing underneath the conversation.
In practice, this might look like slowing down to notice a sensation before rushing past it; or learning to recognize your own patterns when you're activated and moving into fight-or-flight, or when you're beginning to shut down or disconnect from the here and now; or building small resourcing and grounding tools so your body can start to feel safe again, not just your mind.
Here's why I think this matters: so much of what keeps us stuck, old relational wounds, trauma responses, anxiety that doesn't seem to have a clear "reason," lives in older, more primal parts of the nervous system. Somatic work helps us actually reach that layer, so healing isn't just an intellectual understanding. It becomes something that shifts in your body, and in your life.
If you've done the talk therapy route and felt like you understood yourself but still couldn't shift the pattern, or if anxiety and old wounds tend to show up in your body as tension or overwhelm you can't quite explain, this might be worth exploring together.
